  • Sometimes they bore into the developing fruit.
  • Before planting watermelon for effective control, cultivate deep in the field and destroy the cocoon of insect.
  • Determine the time of sowing, according to the number of this pest which is less heat during the summer season.
  • Properly manage the weeds.
  • Spray cypermethrin 10% EC @ 350-500 ml/acre.
  • Or spray Fipronil 5% SC @ 250-300 ml/acre

Control of fruit fly in snake gourd

  • The maggots burrow into the fruits and suck the sap.
  • Infested fruits decay and drop.
  • The fly mainly prefers tender fruits for egg laying.
  • Ovipositional punctures caused by adults also cause injury on fruits and fruit juices oozes out.
  • Collect and destroy infested fruits.
  • Cover developing fruits with paper or polythene cover immediately after anthesis pollination.
  • Maize plants grown in rows at a distance of 8-10 cm in snake gourd field is effective as flies rest on such tall plants.
  • Soil incorporation of carbaryl 10% dust can be made in fruit fly endemic areas.
  • Spraying of Dichlorovas @3 ml/lit of water at fortnightly intervals.
  • Deep ploughing to expose hibernating stages.

Control of tobacco caterpillar in Tomato

  • Deep summer ploughing.
  • Collect and destroy infested plant parts, egg masses and larva.
  • Install sex pheromone trap @ 5 traps/acre for early deduction of the pest.
  • Erection of bird perches @ 5 bird perches/ acre.
  • Apply Profenophos 50 % EC@ 400 ml/acre or quinalphos 25% EC @ 400 ml/acre
  • In case of severe infestation apply Emamectin Benzoate @ 80 Gm/acre

  • Whiteflies are also responsible for transmitting yellow vein mosaic virus or leaf curl disease.
  • 4-5 foliar spray of dimethoate 30% EC @ 300 ml/acre or profenophos 50% EC @ 400 ml/acre at 10 days intervals.

Control of Aphid in moong

  • Severe infestation can cause leaves and shoots to curl, wilt or yellow and stunted plant growth.
  • The honeydew secreted by the aphid, after secretion they produce many fungal diseases on plant.
  • The development of mold on the leaves indicates this.
  • Optimal conditions for their growth are dry and warm climates.
  • Insecticides containing chlorpyrifos 20% EC @ 400ml/acre.
  • Spry acetamiprid 20% SP @ 40-80 gm/acre
  • Hand-pick the aphids manually from the plant or remove infected plant parts.
  • Do not over-water or over-fertilize.

Control of red pumpkin beetle in bottle gourd

  • Avoid showing alternate host plants like cucumber, ridge gourd, sponge gourd, round gourd etc. near the bottle gourd field.
  • Destroy the remains of the old crop.
  • In the early stage of the crop, if the insect appears, hold it by hand and destroy it.
  • Spray the crop with Cypermethrin 25% EC 150 ml/acre +Dimethoat 30% EC 300 ml /acre or Carbaryl 50% WP 400 gm/acre at fortnight intervals starting from 25 days after sowing to control the pest.
  • Spraying with Dichlorvos (DDVP) 76% EC @ 250-350 ml/acre gives satisfactory control of the pest.

Control of leaf miner in cowpea

  • Maggots are feeding the leaves in a zigzag shape.
  • The infestation of this fly can easily be recognized by the presence of shiny whitish streaks on the leaves against the green background.
  • The flowering and fruiting capacity of in infested plants is adversely affected.
  • Spraying of systemic insecticide like Deltamethrin 2.8% EC @ 200 ml/acre or Triazophos 40% EC @ 350-500 ml/acre.

  • For effective control of aphid fortnightly spray of acephate 75% SP @ 300-400 gm/acre or Imidacloprid 17.8% SL @ 100 ml/acre or acetamiprid 20% SP @ 150-200 gm/ acre.

Control of cowpea pod borer

  • Then caterpillars bore into the pods and feed on the seeds.    
  • If flowers and pods are not available, larva feeds on foliage.
  • Application of deep plowing and clean cultivation to expose the resting pupae and crop rotation reduce the pest population.
  • Use tolerant/resistant varieties.
  • Fix 3 feet sticks in the field @10/ha as bird parches to attract predatory birds  
  • Spray chlorpyrifos 20% EC 450 ml/ acre or indoxacarb 14.5% SC @ 160-200 ml/ acre.
  • Spray solution of emamectin benzoate 5% SG@ 100 gm/acre.

Control of White fly in bottle gourd

  • Nymphs are oval, scale-like and greenish-white in colour.
  • Adults are 1 mm long, covered completely with a white waxy bloom.  
  • Nymphs and adults suck the cell sap from the leaves.
  • The affected leaves curl and dry.
  • The affected plants show stunted growth.
  • Whiteflies are also responsible for transmitting yellow vein mosaic virus or leaf curl disease.
  • Soil application of Carbofuran 3% GR 8 kg/acre at the time of sowing.  
  • Spray Dimethoate 30% EC @ 250 gram/acre at fortnightly interval.
  • Pesticide spraying should be changed at every 15 days interval.
